From the very first day, we ensure every child is greeted by a familiar, trusted adult who understands them as an individual. This Key Person becomes the child’s main grown up in the nursery. They take time to observe and listen, learn about interests and preferences, and truly get to know each child and their family.
By building these close and caring relationships, we create a sense of security that helps children settle quickly and confidently. When a child feels safe, they are free to explore, engage and grow. They begin to trust their environment and feel at ease to build friendships, try new activities and take the small risks that support meaningful learning.
The Key Person does more than comfort and support. They also work with families to develop personalised care routines. Everyday experiences such as eating, sleeping, and play become predictable and reassuring, making transitions smoother for both children and parents. Sharing information with families ensures we are working as a team, so there is consistency between home and nursery life.
We also use observations to guide how we support each child’s development. By noticing the little details, the Key Person can plan activities that are right for a child’s stage of learning and interests. This keeps learning purposeful and engaging, and helps children build confidence as they reach their next milestones.
This approach also nurtures emotional wellbeing. Children learn to express their feelings, solve problems with support and become more independent over time. They know they have an adult who cares about them and will help them find their voice and sense of belonging in the nursery community.
